Working the web with a blog is like exercise…

A blog is an absolutely WONDERFUL promotional tool for your work… but successful blogging is a lot like trying to get “physically fit”.

Every January, gyms across North America become clogged with people who have made a New Year’s resolution to “lose weight and exercise” in the upcoming year. By February, the crowds have thinned out considerably and by March the gym is again made up of the same group of “hard core” regulars.

The problem?  Losing weight and seeing results from exercise takes TIME…. time and dedication!  Now, an investment of as little as 30 minutes three times a week will yield visible results over a period of 3-6 months…. but most people bail LONG before they’ve given it enough time or effort.

There are people who exercise just for the love of moving their bodies.  I am not one of these people.  I exercise because I LOVE what it does for my mind and body.  In other words, I love the RESULTS not the process.

As an author, you already have an affection for the written word but it’s still essential to recognize that when you launch your blog, you won’t see “immediate” results.  Just as the first hundred or so sit ups don’t visibly reduce your waistline… the first hundred blog posts are really just a “warm up” for you to find your blog’s voice.

Just as you wouldn’t expect to make the transition from couch potato to marathon runner in less than 6 weeks… you shouldn’t expect to become a top blogger in a similar period of time.

Using proper form whether you’re exercising or blogging will result in better results.  Naturally, there are habits you can develop that will enable you to see results FASTER than you might otherwise, but just like in life… 90% of success is showing up.
